JXL-069 vs PP405: Differences, Research & Status

JXL-069 vs PP405: Differences, Research & Status

Research use only. JXL-069 is an experimental research compound. It is not approved, has no human safety data and is not PP405. PP405 is an investigational product of Pelage Pharmaceuticals in clinical trials. This comparison is for research and educational purposes only.

Why researchers compare JXL-069 and PP405

JXL-069 and PP405 are searched for together because they come from the same place: the UCLA research of William Lowry, Heather Christofk and Michael Jung on lactate metabolism in hair follicle stem cells. Both are mitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC) inhibitors. The difference is what has been published about each and what stage each one is at.

The shared mechanism: MPC inhibition

The MPC carries pyruvate into mitochondria. In a 2017 mouse study, blocking the MPC in hair follicle stem cells raised lactate production and sped up the move from the resting phase to the growth phase of the hair cycle (Flores et al., 2017). Both JXL-069 and PP405 build on that finding. Read more in MPC inhibitors in hair follicle research.

What is published about JXL-069

JXL069 was one of a series of UK-5099 analogues made at UCLA. In permeabilised cells it blocked pyruvate-fuelled respiration with an IC50 of about 42.8 nM, against about 140 nM for UK-5099. The paper also tested more than ten analogues topically in mice, but its text does not name JXL069 among those mouse results (Liu et al., 2021). There are no human studies.

What is published about PP405

Pelage reports that PP405 was well tolerated with no drug detected in the blood in its Phase 1b and Phase 2a trials. In the Phase 2a trial of 78 adults, Pelage reported that at week 8, 31% of PP405-treated men with a higher degree of hair loss had a greater than 20% increase in hair density, compared with 0% on placebo. That is a sponsor-reported subgroup result that has not been peer-reviewed. A Phase 2/3 trial, AWAKEN, was registered in September 2026. Full details are in PP405 explained.

Are JXL-069 and PP405 the same molecule?

This is the most common question, and the honest answer is that it is not officially confirmed. In July 2026, the World Health Organization proposed the name suvomipic for an MPC inhibitor whose chemical name is identical to the published structure of JXL069. Pelage has not publicly linked PP405 to suvomipic or to any structure. Until Pelage or a regulator confirms it, JXL-069 should be treated as a research compound that is compared with PP405, not as PP405.

What this means for researchers

  • PP405 trial results cannot be applied to JXL-069 research material.
  • JXL-069 has no human safety, dosing or efficacy data.
  • Identity and purity of research material should be checked on a certificate of analysis.
